Watauga Lake is a Tennessee Valley Authority lake used to generate power. The lake is twenty-six miles long with a shoreline of one hundred and ten miles. Eighty percent of the shoreline is Cherokee National Forest. The water source is the Watauga River and the Elk River, both of which originate from fresh water mountain springs. This has created a pristine, fresh water lake.
